SECTION 10442

CHEMICALLY DEEP-ETCHED ZINC SIGNAGE
THIS SECTION CAN BE DONE BY ALLOWANCES OR DELETE ALLOWANCES. USE BRAND NAMES FROM PART 2 - PRODUCTS, AND REFER TO SCHEDULE AT END OF PART 3 - EXECUTION.

PART 1	GENERAL

1.1		ALLOWANCES

	A.	Refer to Section 01210 - Cash Allowances for the Cash Allowance Sum applicable to this Section of Work.

	B.	This allowance includes purchase, [and delivery] [and installation] of signs and letters.  [Installation is included in this Section and is part of the Contract Sum.]

1.2		DEFINITIONS

	A.	Signs for Permanent Rooms: Signs for men's and women's rest rooms, numbered rooms and exits.

	B.	Directional and Informational Signs: Wall-mounted signs that provide direction to or information about functional spaces.

ALWAYS KEEP THE FOLLOWING DESIGN REQUIREMENTS. 
THEY STATE ADA REQUIREMENTS.

1.3 DESIGN REQUIREMENTS - PERMANENT ROOMS

A. Tactile and Braille Characters: Raised 1/32 inch accompanied by Grade
II Braille.

B. Typestyles: Upper-case and sans serif.

	C.	Character Height: Minimum 5/8 inch high, maximum 2 inches; all  
upper-case.

	D.	Pictograms (Symbols): Equivalent written description shall be placed directly below symbol.  Written description shall not be within symbol's background field.  Border dimension of symbol's background field shall be minimum 6 inches high.
	
	E.	Finish and Contrast: Characters and background shall be eggshell, matte or other non-glare finish.  Characters shall adequately contrast with background.

1.4		DESIGN REQUIREMENTS - DIRECTIONAL AND INFORMATIONAL SIGNS - WALL MOUNTED

	A.	Typestyles: Width-to-height ratio of between 3:5 and 1:1; stroke width-to-height of between 1:5 and 1:10.

	B.	Character Height: Sized to viewing distance. ANSI Table 703.4.2.4 Minimum 5/8 inches high.

	C.	Finish and Contrast: Characters and background shall be eggshell, matte or other non-glare finish.  Characters shall adequately contrast with background.

1.5		DESIGN REQUIREMENTS - OVERHEAD SIGNS

	A.	Typestyles: Width-to-height ratio of between 3:5 and 1:1; stroke width-to-height of between 1:5 and 1:10.

	B.	Character Height: Sized to viewing distance. ANSI Table 703.4.2.4 Minimum 3 inches high.

	C.	Finish and Contrast: Characters and background shall be eggshell, matte or other non-glare finish.  Characters shall adequately contrast with background.

1.6		SUBMITTALS

A.      Submittals: Follow Section 01300.
 
[	B.	Provide shop drawings' listing of sign types, lettering and locations and overall dimensions of each sign.]

[	C.	Samples: Provide one full size sample sign of type, style and color specified including method of attachment.]

[	D.	Submit manufacturer's installation instructions.]

[	E.	Include installation template and hardware.]


1.7		QUALITY ASSURANCE

	A.	For each sign form and graphic image process indicated furnish products of a single manufacturer.

1.8		REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS

	A.	Comply with applicable provisions of American National Standard Specifications for Making Buildings and Facilities Accessible To and Usable by Physically Handicapped People, ANSI A117.1, latest edition.




	B.	Comply with applicable provisions of [Handicapped Section of the North Carolina State Building Code and] the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

1.9		DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

	A.	Deliver, store and handle products in this Section; follow Section 01600.

	B.	Package separately or in like groups of names, labeled as to names enclosed.  Include installation template, hardware or adhesive specified and installation instructions.

	C.	Store adhesive tape at ambient room temperatures.

1.10		ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
	
	A.	Do not install signs when ambient temperature is below 70 degrees F.  Maintain this minimum temperature during and after installation of signs.

PART 2	PRODUCTS

2.1		ACCEPTABLE MANUFACTURERS

PICK SHEEN AND EITHER SOLID METAL OR LAMINATE DESIGN. MAGNESIUM SIGNS ARE NOT PERMITTED BECAUSE THEY ARE SUSCEPTIBLE TO DISCOLORATION AND CORROSION OVER TIME. FOR INTERIOR SIGNS SELECT FROM MATTE, SEMIGLOSS, OR GLOSS FINISH. FOR EXTERIOR SIGNS SELECT ONLY EXTERIOR GLOSS FINISH. BRASS, COPPER, AND BRONZE ELECTROPLATED SIGNS ARE FOR INTERIOR USE ONLY AS THEY MAY TARNISH OUTSIDE.

2.2		MATERIALS  GENERAL
	
EITHER PICK A COLOR FOR RAISED SURFACES AND BACKGROUND (WHICH HAVE TO CONTRAST WITH ONE ANOTHER), PICK LATER FROM SUBMITTALS, OR SHOW IT ON THE DRAWINGS.  SIMILARLY, EITHER PICK SIZE HERE OR SHOW IT ON THE DRAWINGS. MINIMUM CHARACTER HEIGHT MUST COMPLY WITH ANSI TABLE 703.4.2.4 FOR VIEWING DISTANCE. WHEN SELECTING A COLOR CHOOSE FROM SILVERTONE, ONE OF MANUFACTURER'S OTHER NATURAL ZINC FINISHES, STANDARD OR SPECIAL PAINTS, METALLIC TINTS OR ELECTROPLATED. ELECTROPLATING IS AVAILABLE ONLY ON .125" AND ABOVE THICKNESSES. SILVERTONE IS MANUFACTURER'S NATURAL ZINC FINISH MOST COMMONLY USED. WITH SILVERTONE AND THE METALLIC TINT FINISHES [BRASSTONE, BRONZETONE, COPPERTONE] ALSO SELECT EITHER HORIZONTAL OR VERTICAL GRAIN BRUSHING.

PART 3	EXECUTION

3.1		EXAMINATION

	A.	Verify that surfaces are ready to receive work.

	B.	Beginning of installation means installer accepts existing surfaces.

3.2		INSTALLATION

	A.	Install signs according to manufacturer's instructions.  Install signs after surfaces are painted and finished, in locations indicated.

	B.	Mounting Location: Mount signs to comply with ANSI 703.2.8 mounting location.

	C.	Mounting Height: Mount signs to comply with ANSI 703.4.5 mounting height. Mounting heights shall comply with ANSI TABLE 703.4.2.4, based on the size of the characters on the sign. 

	D.	Locate signs on surfaces, level.  Clean and polish.
IF AN ALLOWANCE IS NOT USED, THEN INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

3.3		SCHEDULE

[	A.	Provide signs with name and number for each space per Architectural Floor Plans for rooms, such as rest room identification, code required signs and telephone identification signs. Do not use abbreviations.
		
		1.	Rest Rooms sign panels shall be as follows: [MEN or WOMEN] [BOYS or GIRLS] (with wheelchair symbol).
		
		2.	Code required signs shall display warning, danger, hazard, emergency, fire and evacuation information.

		3.	Telephone signs shall be either ceiling mounted or flag type.]
